What You Need to Do Before We Arrive

Disconnection is on you — we don’t perform plumbing, electrical, or gas work. Here’s what each appliance type needs before our crew shows up:

  • Refrigerators and freezers — empty the food and unplug the unit. If it has an icemaker, shut off the water valve and disconnect the supply line. Defrost is helpful but not required.
  • Washers — shut off both hot and cold water valves behind the machine, disconnect the supply hoses, and unplug it.
  • Electric dryers — unplug it and disconnect the vent hose.
  • Gas dryers — have a licensed plumber shut off and cap the gas line before we arrive. Disconnect the vent hose. We don’t work on active gas lines.
  • Gas stoves and ranges — capped gas line required before our crew starts. A licensed plumber handles this.
  • Electric stoves and wall ovens — disconnect the power at the breaker or have an electrician disconnect at the unit. Wall ovens need to be unbolted from the cabinet and pulled forward.
  • Built-in dishwashers — these need to be fully uninstalled before we arrive: water supply shut off and disconnected, drain line removed, electrical disconnected, and the unit released from its mounting brackets. A plumber or handyman handles that work.

Once the appliance is disconnected and accessible, we handle the heavy part — pulling it out, navigating stairs and tight spaces, loading the truck, and disposing of it responsibly.

Why Refrigerant Handling Matters

Refrigerators, chest freezers, window AC units, and older dehumidifiers all contain refrigerants. These are federally regulated compounds — they cannot be crushed or disposed of in a standard landfill. Facilities that ignore this create illegal environmental liability.

We route refrigerant-containing appliances to certified area processors that use recovery equipment to capture the refrigerant before the unit is scrapped. This complies with EPA Section 608 requirements. From your end, nothing changes — you don’t need to do anything special. It’s handled on our side.

If you’re clearing out a kitchen remodel or replacing multiple appliances at once, see our furniture removal page for anything else coming out of the space. For full-property situations, estate cleanouts and garage cleanouts handle appliances as part of the larger job.

Why Junk Doctors

Why Customers Choose Us

1

Disconnect First, Then We Haul

Have the appliance disconnected before we arrive — water valves shut off and hoses removed, gas lines capped by a licensed plumber, unit unplugged and pulled away from the wall if possible. We don't perform plumbing, electrical, or gas work. Once it's ready, we handle the lift, the stairs, the truck, and the disposal.

2

No Need to Empty It First

Fridges and chest freezers get hauled out as-is. You don't need to pull every shelf or defrost it beforehand — we've carried plenty out with the ice still in them. Grab the food you want to keep. Leave everything else. That's the whole instruction.

3

Refrigerants Handled Properly

Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units contain refrigerants that can't go to a standard landfill. We route them to certified area recycling facilities that handle proper capture and disposal under the [EPA Responsible Appliance Disposal Program](https://www.epa.gov/rad). You don't need to do anything special — that's handled on our end.

4

Same-Day Because Appliances Block Spaces

A broken fridge doesn't sit quietly in a corner. It blocks the kitchen, it smells, and if it's a chest freezer in the garage, it's been tripping people for months. Call before 3 PM and we can be there today. If we can't make the window, the pickup is free — not discounted, free.

FAQ

Questions Answered.

No — disconnection is on you. Water valves need to be shut off and hoses removed, gas lines capped by a licensed plumber, and the appliance unplugged before we arrive. We don't perform plumbing, electrical, or gas work. Once the appliance is disconnected, we handle the heavy part — pulling it out, navigating stairs and tight spaces, loading it, and disposing of it responsibly.
Once the appliance is disconnected, a single fridge or washer runs 15–20 minutes from arrival to loaded. A full kitchen and laundry room clearout with four or five disconnected appliances takes about an hour. Stairs or tight access add time; let us know when you book so we bring the right crew size.
Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units contain refrigerants (R-22, R-410A) that are federally regulated and can't go to standard disposal. We work with EPA-certified facilities where available to handle those units properly — the refrigerant is captured and reclaimed before the metals are processed. Steel, copper, and aluminum from the appliance shell go to scrap recyclers where possible. We make the effort to keep appliances out of standard landfill disposal.
Yes. Single-item pickups are common — a fridge, a washer, a stove. Pricing is based on truck space, so a single appliance that takes up a quarter of the truck is priced as a quarter load. You're not paying for a full truck when you only have one item.
You don't need to move it — but it does need to be disconnected. Water valves shut off and hoses pulled, gas lines capped by a plumber, unit unplugged. Once that's done, we handle the heavy lifting, tight spaces, and stairs.
Yes — working or not. It doesn't matter if the appliance is broken, old, or just unwanted. We take it either way.
A single appliance typically runs $100–$200 depending on size and weight. A refrigerator or chest freezer on the heavy end runs $130–$200. A full kitchen clearout with multiple appliances typically runs $300–$550. You get the firm price on-site before we start — no estimate that changes once we're already in your kitchen.
Yes — once it's disconnected. Built-in appliances need to be uninstalled by a plumber, electrician, or handyman beforehand: water supply shut off and disconnected, drain line removed, electrical disconnected, mounting hardware released. We don't perform that work. After the unit is free and accessible, we pull it out and haul it.
Stairs add time, which can affect the quote. A refrigerator on a second floor or in a basement stairwell takes longer than ground-floor access. We assess the route during the site walk and price it accordingly — no surprise stair fee.
Refrigerators, freezers, and window AC units contain refrigerants — R-22, R-410A, or older compounds — that are federally regulated and cannot go to standard landfill. We route these appliances to EPA-certified facilities that use recovery equipment to capture the refrigerant before the unit is processed for scrap. This is required by federal law regardless of appliance age or condition.
Yes. A refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, and over-range microwave all fit in a single truck in most cases. Multi-appliance jobs are common — we plan crew size and truck capacity based on what you're clearing.
Have a licensed plumber shut off and cap the gas line before we arrive. We don't work on active gas lines and we don't cap them ourselves. Once the line is capped and the range is pulled away from the wall (or we can pull it once we get there), we handle the haul.
